“ Fish is full of mercury, it’s better not to eat it! ” IT’S NOT TRUE! Only certain species of fish may have mercury levels that pose a health risk. In fact, the amount of mercury in fish depends on the species: large predatory fish, such as swordfish and tuna, are more likely to be contaminated with mercury than smaller fish. This is because mercury, like other pollutants, accumulates along the food chain. We have seen that fish is good for your health so the possibility that it may contain pollutants doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t eat it! There is a simple rule to follow that limits the intake of unhealthy substances:eat small or medium fish (e.g. mackerel, sea bream, sole, sardines or anchovies) more often and eat large species and adult predatory fish (e.g. swordfish, tuna, blue shark, dogfish shark) less frequently. Heavy metals and other pollutants can accumulate in larger fish over the years. Don’t go without fish on the menu and remember to vary!
