Esselunga, has developed the “Pesca Sostenibile” project. This Sustainable Fishing project was developed after almost 20 years of: studies, inspections at sea and on fish farms, collaborations with university institutes, public authorities, associations and certification bodies. “ Pesca Sostenibile ” means: • the non-over-exploitation of fish stocks; • the banning of techniques that have a strong impact on the seabed; • the use of selective fishing equipment; • no bycatch listed as “vulnerable” or on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) red list; • complying with legal requirements. Rainbow trout, sea bass and sea bream, are all part of the Esselunga Naturama supply chain. The fish are farmed: following regulations which govern the supply chain and traceability at every stage of growth; using sustainable criteria; in a clean, sanified, and well-ventilated fish-farming environment which is constantly monitored. The farming waters are controlled using certified biological monitoring, while the feed uses raw materials of vegetable origin, fish flour and oil only. Our technicians carry out inspections on boats, and on the premises of all those involved in the supply chain (fishermen, breeders, producers, etc). Quality control vets carry out strict and accurate inspections on quality, minimum size and marketable species. Checks are also carried out at our stores. In 2016 the Green Peace survey “Mute like a fish” found Esselunga to be the only Italian retail chain to have all its labels compliant .
